Corals wrapped in plastic

چکیده
A new way into the ER Membrane-embedded proteins are highly diverse in topology, physical characteristics, and location. This diversity necessitates multiple pathways for their effective membrane insertion. Guna et al. found that a widely conserved protein complex is responsible for inserting a subset of membrane proteins into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane (see the Perspective by Fry and Clemons Jr.). This ER membrane protein complex (EMC) inserts transmembrane domains whose topology and hydrophobicity preclude effective recognition by other insertion factors. This finding helps explain why the loss of EMC causes ER stress and altered protein trafficking. —SMH Science, this issue p. 470; see also p. 390 QUANTUM GASES

Chemoreception drives plastic consumption in a hard coral.
The drivers behind microplastic (up to 5mm in diameter) consumption by animals are uncertain and impacts on foundational species are poorly understood. We investigated consumption of weathered, unfouled, biofouled, pre-production and microbe-free National Institute of Standards plastic by a scleractinian coral that relies on chemosensory cues for feeding. Experiment one found that corals ingest...
متن کاملMicroplastic ingestion by scleractinian corals
Microplastics (i.e. plastic fragments <5 mm in diameter) are a widespread form of contamination in marine ecosystems around the globe (Moore 2008). Coastal ecosystems, such as inshore coral reefs, are likely to be particularly heavily impacted by microplastics because these contaminants often enter the marine environment through fragmentation of larger plastic items from terrestrial sources (Th...
متن کاملPlastic waste associated with disease on coral reefs.
Plastic waste can promote microbial colonization by pathogens implicated in outbreaks of disease in the ocean. We assessed the influence of plastic waste on disease risk in 124,000 reef-building corals from 159 reefs in the Asia-Pacific region. The likelihood of disease increases from 4% to 89% when corals are in contact with plastic. Structurally complex corals are eight times more likely to b...
متن کاملAutologous Diced Cartilage in Nasal Septoplasty
Diced rib cartilage is an acceptable option in severe nasal deformities. We present our preliminary experience in KAMC in nasal septoplasties using the autologous diced costal cartilage. This is a retrospective study of the 22 cases who needed the autologous diced costal cartilage in our centre in 4 years. All our patients needed autologous diced rib cartilages. Twelve were wrapped with tempora...
متن کاملبررسی تأثیر کیسه پلاستیکی زیپ کیف در پیشگیری از هیپوترمی نوزادان نارس: کارآزمایی بالینی تصادفی
Background and purpose: Hypothermia after the birth has serious complications and conventional methods for warming of preterm newborns are insufficient. New guideline of neonatal resuscitation program recommended wrapping of premature newborns in polyethylene bags and because of controversies in use of different transparent membranes in studies the aim of this study is determination of effect o...
